Persian, oriental, wool and silk — washed by hand, repaired by hand.
This is a river city with TVA reservoirs on three sides of it, a hundred thousand people who move house in the same fortnight every August, and houses that run from 1890s Queen Anne to the panel houses the government put up at Oak Ridge in 1943. Rugs here fail in ways that have very little to do with anyone walking on them. Rugs are collected, washed off site by hand, dried flat, and brought back.
A hand-knotted Tabriz and a polypropylene flatweave off a shelf are not the same object, and they should never meet the same brush. Vegetable dyes bleed. Silk scorches under heat. Cotton foundations shrink if they are pulled out of the wash wet and dried under tension. Guessing is how rugs get ruined.
So nothing gets cleaned until it has been looked over: fibre content, dye stability, weave construction, backing, previous repairs, and whatever the last few East Tennessee summers have left in the foundation. Only then does the rug get a method. That inspection costs nothing, it happens before you commit to anything, and if a rug is not worth the cost of cleaning we will say so.

Water damage service
Knoxville sits at about 890 feet in the Great Valley of East Tennessee, on the river where the Holston and the French Broad meet, with the Cumberland Plateau on one side and the Smokies on the other. That is a mild, wet, four-season climate, and none of it is what actually ruins rugs here. What ruins rugs here is how this city is used: a reservoir shoreline that moves twice a year, a university lease calendar that empties and refills whole neighborhoods every August, and a very large number of houses whose best rugs have not been lifted since the Ford administration.
Some of the soaked rugs on this route met a storm. Most of them met a supply line behind a washing machine, a water heater at the end of its life, a slow leak under a dishwasher, or a walk-out door left open onto a lake room after a hard afternoon on the water. Water that starts clean is rarely clean by the time it reaches the rug, because it has crossed a floor on the way.
The version we see most in Knoxville, though, is self-inflicted and nobody expects it to count as water damage. A rented hot-water machine puts far more water into a wool rug than it can take back out, and a rug left to dry on a hard floor after that is a wet rug with contamination sealed into it. What matters next is the same either way. A wet wool foundation is a growing medium and a warm room speeds it up. Drying the surface with a fan leaves everything in the base of the pile and produces a rug that seems fine for a few weeks and then does not. The rug has to be flushed, treated, and dried flat with the moisture content actually measured — and photographed before any of that, because that is what an insurer will ask for.
